These Sneakers Are Made Entirely From Ocean Waste

Our oceans are full of plastic. Forunately scientists are mapping where it lies, which means we can begin scooping it up—and perhaps even start to use it to create new products, like these sneakers.
A collaboration between Addidas and Parley for the Oceans, these running shoes are a design concept made using just plastics found in oceans. The bulk materials are made from reclaimed waste; fibers, yarns and filaments are wound from illegal deep-sea gillnets. The bright blue lines in particular are made form the distinctive blue nets you may have seen in the back of a trawler. All of the materials were sourced from a 110-day expedition of the coast of West Africa.
They are, sadly, just a concpet. But Addidas and Parley for the Oceans are actually going to release real consumer products later in the year—and these sneakers no doubt point towards the kind of styles you can expect to see.
