Linksys ships high-gain antennas, promising an easy way to extend Wi-Fi coverage
If you're looking for a quick way to extend your existing router's Wi-Fi coverage, Linksys has something that might just help.
The networking vendor June 30 announced the availability of its WRT dual-band, omnidirectional high-gain antennas for consumers. These antennas are accessories for Linksys' new WRT routers (the WRT1900AC and WRT1200AC), but they will work with any existing router that uses the RP-SMA antenna connection, which is the majority of AC routers with detachable antennas on the market.
When used in the vertical position, the antennas are designed to extend Wi-Fi coverage across the horizontal plane, making them a good fit for a large, single-story homes. They can be adjusted to broadcast in different directions, however.Linksys says these new antennas deliver 4dBi in the 2.4GHz band and 7dBi in the 5GHz band and can offer up to double antenna gain over stock antennas. You have to detach the router's factory antennas and replace them with the new Linksys high-gain antennas, but they're supposed to be easy to install.
